永徳の死の一カ月前、等伯と狩野派が仙洞御所の襖絵(御殿は1854年に焼失)の発注をめぐって激しく争った。当初,等伯に依頼された仕事を,永徳らは大物公家に直訴して奪い取った。このことが永徳にとっては大きな心の負担,ストレスとなり死期を早めたと考えられる。
