Like many of the best finds from that era of the Agora Excavations, this statuette of Apollo was recorded in beautiful #watercolor by the master illustrator Piet de Jong.
Without high quality color photos, this was the best way to accurately depict artifacts in color!

A little, later #Roman, jet object, recovered from excavations in #Suffolk. It's of uncertain function - it could be a spindlewhorl, but jet was frequently used by the Romans for producing jewellery, so it's also possible the object was intended for use as a pendant. #Archaeology
In the case of this exedra/tablinum, the paintings were exposed to the modern atmosphere since the excavation. Hence, the design that A. Magliano documented in 1890 is no longer visible.

Personal concept I created years back, with lots of excavation "action figures" ("Pakal Sinkhole: Palenque Excavation")
@paulhaywood22 Here’s a photograph from the Viking Ship Museum, showing the Oseburg Ship excavation team in 1904!
#OTD 4 years ago we finished the 3-days recovery of Lancaster NN775 near Glabbeek. Research was done by local historians in cooperation with BAHAAT and Plane Hunters Recovery Team Belgium. I was asked by @CynrikD to lead the archaeological excavation.

What better way to spend #InternationalArchaeologyDay than at @RomanFindsGrp conference listening to @BarbaraBirley talk about #Roman finds from recent excavations at @VindolandaTrust like this bronze votive hand and silver duck-shaped brooch.

#DAIEurasien25: Vertical and horizontal logs, collapsed like a Mikado game, were unearthed during excavations in the #Gorbunovo peat bog. Photogrammetry, GIS, & dendrochronology helped assigning these wooden constructions to the late 3rd mill. BC.

#SketchbookSunday, from the archaeologist‘s excavation journal:
"#Breakfast at such an early hour consists of strong #tea, a slice of soft white bread, and a handful #olives - taken in the excavation house’s courtyard in the light of setting stars and a single #lightbulb."
DAY 11 #BonitaApplebumWeek: WONDER WOMAN!
...huh? Bet you didn’t know @TheRealStanLee did a retelling of Wonder Woman drawn by @JimLee! Maria Mendoza was an activist protesting an illegal excavation site when she was given the power of an Incan Sun God. #HispanicHeritageMonth
Under #Roman law it was forbidden to bury the dead inside the walls of the town. This rare enamelled cockerel figurine was found in an infant burial during excavations of the former Bridges Garage site, #Cirencester, in 2011.
