Caterpie is based on swallowtail caterpillars, mostly the spicebush swallowtail. The big black spots aren't eyes at all, but are only meant to resemble snake's eyes and the red organ, the osmeterium, is meant to resemble a snake's tongue, all to scare off predators. (1/2)
