I thought I'd start today with one that I haven't shown for a long time. This is "Stoke by Nayland" by Harold Steggles from 1933. It will be in our forthcoming exhibition from 11/09/21 to 08/01/22.

28 May 1626: d. Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk at home in Charing Cross He'd been Lord Treasurer & Lord Chamberlain, Chancellor of Cambridge whose political career was badly damaged by his daughter Frances Countess of Somerset's implication in the Overbury affair (Weiss)

Initially he painted landscapes before, as his reputation grew, he turned to genre by 1808. His first works were shown at the 1804 RA exhibition. Suffolk Landscape (c1810), John Varley (1814) & Horses (1816). Varley was his brother-in-law.
