Through Subtext and Metaphors: What Northstar Taught Me About Being Queer
In celebration of Pride Month and tomorrow's launch of MARVEL'S VOICES: PRIDE, we reached out to Northstar fan Mac, @transnorthstar, for his thoughts on what Jean-Paul means to him: https://t.co/ePuprFYQNI
The seven letter word for this puzzle isnt the one you're thinking of.
... ironically the correct word is Subtext.
Even compared to UXM, New Mutants has been an incredibly queer book thanks to CC's subversion of Shooter's mandates and indulgence of subtext.
To that point, two relationships have started to really cement themselves in the book–Rahne and Dani (here twice-noted as soul-mates)...
After being suggested over the last two issues, Karma's puppetry of the Arena is only formally revealed when Sam confronts her face to face.
The subtext of his response, "Glory! It's a girl!" communicates that we should all be shocked that what Claremont wants us to see...
@takenbysattler when you look at the gay subtext it's really interesting. Have you seen 'Scream Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street"? Some really good insight into the film and also makes me feel so bad for Mark Patton. Really reccomend it.
Having a virtuous hero acknowledge that it is inappropriate to have a sexual relationship with an underage girl is an important declaration for the series given the potential for an absence of commentary on the issue to enable subtextual speculation. 7/10
...with his male characters, but does so well with Jean-Paul–the moment even more impactful absent the fetishization that often accompanies the queer subtext he implies between women in the Run.
Paul Smith's (god I've missed him) art is perfect to capture these quieter...
...and their telepathic rapport is some of CC's heaviest subtext and really reminds that while Dani & Illyana have grown closer since her introduction to the book, *Rahne* is Dani's best friend.
The contrast between Dani's giggles & the doctor's awful news is deeply tragic...
...a confused and horrified Rachel runs away from Illyana at the door.
I often think of these two characters in relation to their subtextual relationships with Kitty, but had completely forgotten that Rachel's first contact with the Mansion after her return was actually Illyana.

as far as I'm concerned they're canon like it's the most clear subtext can be
HE BLUSHED WHEN HE HUGGED HIM

Something that I'm finding very disappointing is that people are critical of the Rymin subtext. Like, everyone has completely embraced Jesslake and THAT was subtext, they aren't fully canon at the end, but Rymin is getting hate, I wonder why
but yes there is no homoerotic subtext with batjokes in comics, totally
Latest ep on #Excalibur #6—out NOW!—talks subtext: “This baby imagery evokes a famous kink, with deep roots in comics. William Marston, creator of Wonder Woman, wrote a thesis on sorority baby parties, which had lots of queer subtext.” -@DemanAndrew #XMen
