I see the division between the research works on paper and the more formal realisation of ideas on canvas as mythmaking and then ritual. I have been playing with high textures, with variations on the priming and finally with some heavy underpainting https://t.co/kA123rxMG1

Sketch Vs. Underpainting

People often ask about my painting process, so here is a behind the scenes look from underpainting to finish. Is your process similar?

So easy to forget to paint for fun. This was the underpainting this eve for little reedfringed Suffolky shorepool with waders but after half an hour of smearing it about, in go the wolves hunting wildboar in the snow.

Landscape in softpastels. I started this one by sketching the general outlines with a pastel pencil. I did a dry underpainting in hard pastels before moving on with the softpastels. These are mostly Unisons. Softpastels on dark blue Pastelmat paper (8” x 12”).

My favorite thing in painting is letting the underpainting show through. ☺️ As a result, my paintings usually look about 3/4 finished, but that's just how I like em!

Morning selfie. Experimenting with colour and grisaille underpainting.

This is the two together. I am still, I think, being a bit heavy handed - the next must allow more of the underpainting to come through. although it is there on these two

Detail. A better, more vested painter would call this an underpainting. First drafts are all I got.

Oh wow, I get why people are like “grayscale underpainting first”

Painted this while pondering about things that can only be seen in the right light spectrum. I think that it's why I experimented with underpainting in watercolor - to see what would vanish and what would pop! Lead to some really cool layers!
