My friend complained that one of his artworks was stolen by someone else on Instagram, after I saw that the work he uploaded did not have a watermark, it's very important to use watermark on your own artworks even if it is a commission or personal project.

True, but if they can crop out the signature or watermark, they're more likely to use the art.
These type of people look for art that doesn't have watermarks.
They want "clean" art to rp with.
This is what I do to my art and character art to prevent theft.
