This was my process. I make a rough coloured sketch in Photoshop, then import it into Illustrator and I create vector lines and add colour. I remove the lines, import the image back into Photoshop, create a coloured shadow and add an overlay mask of purple and blue light/shadow.

Finally, made a reference sheet for my babe Higashizawa and boy did I need this. References for this man is always hard to get & always in shadow. I’m not surprised my version (without references) is so vastly different but damn that’s a change I’m okay with😳

By knowing the material, the environment, and 3D structure of what we are drawing, we can make a good guess as to the colors. All color is due to reflection. Imagine what each plane “sees.” When a surface is no longer “seeing” the light source, it turns into shadow.
