This was the first illustration assignment I did in ink wash, pen, and colored pencil that also featured bookshelves. It’s Charles Dickens with his pet raven Grip - the inspiration for a character in one of Dickens’ books that inspired Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven.

These 3 were done in the same session. The first is from a pose that was an hour, the second was 20 mins and the last was 5 mins. The first piece definitely gives me Charles Dickens/ Victorian Streets of London vibes!

“Hope” is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all
And sweetest in the Gale is heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm
-Emily Dickenson

I felt a funeral in my brain
and mourners to and fro
kept treading, treading till I felt that
the sense was breaking through

Pip Dickens is a Lecturer in Painting on LICA’s Fine Art course. Concepts of illusion and double meaning are recurring themes in her work - the notion that we may receive two contrasting visual (or intellectual) responses to a single stimulant

"In the days when Dickens's work was coming out in serial, people talked about it as if real life were itself the interlude between one issue of 'Pickwick' and another."
~G.K. Chesterton, Charles Dickens, The Last of the Great Men

Charles Dickens was born 1812. In 1845, he visited Rome's Non-Catholic Cemetery.
'To an English traveller,' Dickens notes, this marks the graves of Shelley and Keats, ''whose name is writ in water' that shines brightly in the landscape of a calm Italian night.'
