Thing that also keeps D&D from being as Mainstream is probably the fact that J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.Lewis has inspired tons of Sword and Sorcery stories in the same vein as D&D.
Gobelin Slayer the anime is like a D&D campaign.

Before that is centuries of fantasy lore.

Got told on an interview (for a London studio) that I was the only British applicant on the shortlist, the rest were all french/danish. If I'm on par with people from gobelins and the animation workshop according to them, then I'm very happy even if I don't get the job.
