Unless it's flat color or a highlight, I dont recommend using white to color "white" things.

As an example. Polar bears are "white" but the image below was colored with gray tones, orange, indigo, dark blues, yellows and grays. The only white used was for the eye highlight!

I had to desaturate the blue digitally to make the linework pop out, I knew I'd made a mistake going for the very dark indigo, but once I'd put it down I had to finish it.
