The Bazaar of Athens, Dodwell, 1819.
Beneath the Acropolis we can see Disdar Aga, the Ottoman governor of the city, being served coffee, women sitting with their bundles, and an African man staring back at us.
Translations into Turkish by the Polish-Ottoman dragoman Wojciech Bobowski/ʿAlī Ufḳī (c. 1610-1675) of biographies of historical figures from the Italian translation of Guillaume Rouillé’s 1553 Promptuarium iconum insigniorum. BnF, Supplément turc 1217.
The illustration was published in Cairo Punch magazine (no affiliation with the more famous British Punch mag). An Arabic poem below celebrates the Ottomans and laments the plight of Muslims under other empires.
Egyptian illustration, ca. 1909, showing the nations of the Ottoman Empire dancing gleefully around a figure representing the “Army”. Other Muslim nations of the world are meanwhile miserably chained to the French, Dutch and British empires.

Narratives on #pilgrimage and the Holy Cities were an important part of #Ottoman #Turkish literary #heritage. As this early 18C copy of Gubarî's 16C Kâbename (Or 6983) shows, sometimes they were accompanied by visual cues and #illustration of the #Kaaba, #Makkah, and the #Hajj.
