20 Sept 1875, Matthias Erzberger, German politician & Minister of Finance 1919-1920, born. Introduced 1917 Peace Resolution that led to Bethman-Hollweg's fall. As head of German delegation, signed armistice ending on 11 Nov 1918. In 1921, assassinated, aged 45.

6 Sept 1917, Vice-Admiral Rosslyn Wemyss appointed Second Sea Lord for British Admiralty. 10 days later, relieved by Vice-Admiral Herbert Heath. In Dec 1917, Wemyss became First Sea Lord. 11 Nov 1918, was senior British representative at signing of armistice. 1933, died, aged 69.

28 July 1917, British established its first Tank Corps (1st in world) with Col Hugh Elles in command. 20 Nov 1917, he led 350 tanks into battle at Cambrai. After he commanded Tank Corps Training Centre from 1919 to 1923. Retired as a Lt Gen in 1938 & died in 1945, aged 65.

5 June 1915, submarine HMS E11 ended three-week mission in Sea of Marmara in which she infiltrated Istanbul & sank 11 ships. Its commander, Martin Dunbar-Nasmith (1883-1965), awarded Victoria Cross. Became Admiral & was C-in-C Plymouth & Western Approaches from 1939 to 1942.

11 May 1889, Paul Nash (d.1946), British surrealist painter, born. 2nd Lt in Hampshire Regiment in was wounded & then worked as an Official War Artist. Works include powerful views of shattered landscape of No Man's Land. They rank among most memorable images of the war.

7 May 1919, Germans presented with Treaty of Versailles. Were greatly disillusioned by terms. Von Brockdorff-Rantzau, foreign minister: ‘This fat volume was quite unnecessary. They could’ve expressed whole thing more simply in one clause - Germany renounces its existence’.

5 May 1917, Eugene Bullard (1895-1961) gained pilot's licence. Became 1st African-American military pilot (French Air Service). 1913, went to France. Worked as musician & boxer. On outbreak of enlisted in Foreign Legion. Post-war experience of USA led him to settle in Paris.

1 April 1918, Royal Flying Corps & Royal Naval Air Service merged to form first autonomous air force in world. New service had its own ministry under Secretary of State for Air. It was most powerful air force in world with nearly 300,000 personnel & nearly 23,000 aircraft.
