I paint in the tones of the various elements, so in this case the lighter ruff and darker dress. After that, i merge all the layers, and painting on one layer do a full render with a few different brushes. Pay attention to where hard/soft/invisible edges are.

It's super interesting hearing ya'll's processes a bit bc it's different than mine but we are all aiming for similar styles, ya know? For cel style work, it's usually a bunch of multiply layers, overlays, screens, and using layers as selection masks etc

Duplicating my lineart and gaussian blurring makes my art much softer. Same with merging all layers, doing the same blur and then soft light and adjust
