10 years after he created Flash Gordon, Alex Raymond decided to volunteer for the US Marines in 1944.

He trained in Virginia then was posted on an aircraft carrier as a combat artist. He left San Diego for Hawaii, then Okinawa, Borneo, & finally Leyte. He drew the entire time:
