I think both can be executed very well, but I think my personal preference is simpler designs that wouldn’t translate the best into the show persay but still retain a relative similarity! It’s usually what I do in my pony designs :)

Some artwork for Uta macross game which Ranka never got an in game outfit based on. Likely if the game was still going on Ranka would have at least gotten one of them. Minmay did get the one based/similar to the one in that artwork.
