My sketch of the day was inspired by John J. Audubon’s American Coot
Plate 239

Mine is nowhere near as cool as his but it sure was fun to make.

This is a John Gerrard Keulemans appreciation tweet. For his illustrations of birds, he was like the Dutch version of John James Audubon. But unfortunately, many of his avian subjects, most of which were in New Zealand, would meet their demise during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Audubon was accused of academic fraud and plagiarism. He enslaved Black people and actively condoned white supremacist ideals. He even stole human remains, sending skulls of white and black deceased people to a colleague, who used them as ‘proof’ that white ppl were superior 2/3

On this day in 1785, John J. Audubon was born in Haiti. Many years later, a young girl became obsessed with his paintings - forever branding her as a "bird nerd".
