Irish readers can see one of Van Dyck’s celebrated Genoese portraits, the Red Boy @NGIreland & a homoerotic male nude study, for one of his St Sebastians. Some of his finest works are at @NationalGallery
London including Charles I on Horseback (1637/8)
The key component of a Van Dyck was effortless swagger. Such was his genius that the elaborate costumes & unlikely ringlets play second fiddle to the overall style of his work. Prince Tomaso (1634/5), James Stuart (1634-5), Henri II (1634) & Charles I & Henrietta Maria (1632)
Van Dyck went to Italy (1621-7) where he was based in Genoa. Self-Portrait (1621), Agostino Pallavicini (c1621), St Martin Dividing his Cloak (c1621) & Lady Shirley (1622). This period of his work was marked by a rich colour scheme of red & black in his portraits

Anthony van Dyck was born #OnThisDay in 1599. At over 3.5 metres high, his 'Equestrian Portrait of Charles 1' is one of our giants. Over the last year we've cleaning, relined and retouched the painting, filming its journey along the way: https://t.co/7tgb5tvajy
After his 1st trip to London, Anthony van Dyck–b.#OTD 1599–returned to Flanders with "the pomp of Zeuxis…& being naturally of elevated mind & anxious to make himself distinguished, he therefore wore—as well as silks—a hat with feathers & brooches, gold chains across his chest…"
Van Dyck's painting of Charles I - but where was it in the king's lifetime? It was hung on the back wall of a gallery in St James' Palace (red dot) framed within two preceding doorways to create an effect that almost brought it alive.

In 1759 the family moved to fashionable Bath to gain more lucrative sitters. He took time to study Van Dyck & the results were magnificent. Countless of Howe (1764), Lord Vernon (1767) & the famous Blue Boy (1770). The latter was his successful challenge to Van Dyck
19thc immediacy. Against the light background, the brilliancy of van Dyck's head studies is even more apparent.
