I've spent a lot of time looking at all the various generations' artwork over the years. Usually you can't see their underside, but when you can, they're almost never lit from underneath. Nidorina's another good example -- no outline, but still has her white underbelly in 2020.

I was expecting some folks might disagree with my interpretation on this one. My thinking's that this kinda white underbelly stuff was almost never outlined in Gen 1. Like Cubone for example, who also had a white underbelly in Gen 1, and kept it his modern design.

Whereas on this - there's the crispy oranges and reds on the chicken and crab but little colour variation between them. Whay are we looking at that large swarth of grey underbelly there? GROSS. That blue lilacy colour of the fish clashes with everything else and just looks yucky
