Medieval thinkers saw dragons as scary beasts doing the “devil’s work.”Such myths spurred Victorian writers & illustrators in their depiction of dragons. Here are two 12th-cen manuscripts of fiery dragons, & Arthur Rackham’s fairy-tale, but fierce dragons. 🐉

Back in the late 80s, my mom wrote and sketched stories for my brother and I when we were kids.

I found one of her original manuscripts, complete with her drawings.

She doesn't know it yet, but I'm going to turn this into a paperback for her by Christmas. 😎 Let's go!

Fun fact: before the printing press, late medieval and early modern people joked about a demon called Titivillus whose whole schtick was introducing errors into manuscripts

This demon is alive and well today too

Featuring stunning illustrations from the British Library’s rich medieval collection, Dogs in Medieval Manuscripts provides – through discussion of dogs both real and imaginary – an astonishing picture of the relationship of dogs to humans in the medieval world.

It’s not just brilliant fiction that we’re publishing – we’ve also put out incredible non-fiction titles so far this year, covering topics like the history of tattooing, the second world war seen through maps, a cartographical quiz book, and dogs in Medieval manuscripts!

These illuminated manuscripts influenced how I approached drawing “Doctor Caim.” They helped me decide on a simple four-panel per page format. They also helped me discover an overall color palette; I often took colors directly from these pages with Photoshop’s eyedropper tool.

Found this on the William Blake Society Facebook group. I always knew there was a deep connection between Blake and comics! I tend to think of Blake’s illuminated manuscripts (the combination of words and images) as a precursor to modern-day comics.
