10 January 49 BC. Julius Caesar famously crossed the Rubicon River, in northern Italy. To remain in Gaul meant forfeiting his power to his enemies in Rome. By crossing the Rubicon into Italy, he was declaring war. It’s seen as a pivotal moment in the history of the Roman Empire.
