What I do is use the blur tool to soften some curves, moreso on the rounder surfaces and keep sharp edges on flat surfaces. Like

I also wanted to show the final version and WIP version that I considered a final. I like it, but it didn't have as much impact as I wanted it to have. It was too "clean" and nice, so I tried to make it more emotional by messing up some edges and adding interesting brush strokes.

Skin usually has a lot of soft blended edges, but to create interest and catch attention you should include harder edges and structure too. These happen where shadows are cast (e.g when the head casts a shadow on the neck), if the light source is strong (e.g direct sunlight) etc
