Here's a little comparison between how I used to color and applying brushing!

The change it's pretty slightly, but I guess it really would help the artwork be softer to the eye if you dare to focus in the details.

In moments of lucid stupidity, I sometimes come up with brilliance.

Less focus on specifics of shading and lighting, instead just applying and mixing 3 separate tones in appropriate places. Light and dark create contrast that provide spherical depth.
