6. My favorite male character is Adol Christin of the Ys series. Its debatable if he is really the "Chosen One", but it's done in a way that isn't too obnoxious. His main goal is just traveling the world, but it so happens that he gets pulled to saving the world numerous times.

From Altered Destiny (Enhanced EGA adventure game). The first one is of a dangerous noxious gas that moves back and forth across the screen as two big sprites moving in opposite directions on top eachother. The other is static but denotes hazy heat emanating from the center.
