I know the reason they likely go with the first is the lack of dialog boxes, but another example of this is Hairo who's profile is just this goofy fucking panel of him which looks like a "delete dis" image. It s a decent wiki though, helpful for source checking on Fanbook stuff.

I'm analyzing it a bit and... I feel the one on the right feels off because:
Pupils are near dead center so it looks like he's staring into your soul
Mouth has more detail than the old one, which makes it sorta uncanny
Mouth is larger, making it the main focus of the image.
