The original concept for BoBoiBoy initially has the powers come from the headwear the kids wear. Since Gopal back then was not depicted with any headwear, he was likely not meant to have powers. Whether Ying's cap not having eyes meant anything or not is a mystery.

I wanted to made a jade styled weapon since its a rather rarely seen material in-game. The idea for making a them just 2 pairs of hands on your back... I cant say where that came from, but I think it's better than the initial design.
