It's not an especially new trend. I'd say something that's been creeping in during the last decade as color design moves away from paint to digital. It showed up in Adventure's often bright daytime color palette.

Looks like they're use a fixed-colour palette for the pictures, which is a shame. It could look so much better with a dynamic palette. But I like the button-y gadget-y look of the desktop - especially the phone with the retractable antenna. The plane travel-bits are a nice touch.
