Painting 8 was inspired by some of Goya's aquatint pieces, such as "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters", mostly in composition & contrast, as well as the abstract subject matter.

by contrast, i tend to interpret covered mouths as indicating an unusual or uncomfortable degree of honesty (not always obviously, but often). Its a face that's nothing BUT eyes and it tends to confront you pretty openly with the emotions/selfhood of the mask wearer
