Getting close with this Gainsborough transcription. Underpainting nearly done. Lots of flake white in the face ready for the glazes. It’s going to get darker and richer in colour. Another few sessions yet.

Challenged to reproduce a painting by locally boy Thomas Gainsborough. Way beyond me but let’s give it a go. This is step one of probably many. First let’s get some paint on the canvas, blocking in and getting rid of the white. Watch this space!

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) created this beautiful painting of Holywells Park in 1748-1750. It's his only known landscape of Ipswich and depicts the park's man-made reservoirs. The park is still a stunning part of our town, extending over 69 acres.

Thomas Gainsborough reportedly had issues painting Mrs Siddons's nose exclaiming 'Confound the nose, there's no end to it'. See this painting on display in Room 34: https://t.co/N0MQYXCEsd
