Clinking & clattering chains drew closer, signalling more than a contretemps. The author fidgeted trembling hands in a puddle, unknowingly alerting nearby Gigantopithecus hiding behind funnel-like trees—unknowingly about to be saved by the same creatures once caged. #TrickyTues

One of my favorite genres of paleontology is "crazy big versions of modern animals." Like Megaloceros, Megatherium, Sarcosuchus, and Gigantopithecus.
For #FossilFriday, here's my 2017 #paleoart of the largest known ape, Gigantopithecus blacki, as featured in the Palaeoartist's Handbook and my upcoming book, Life Through the Ages II. It's sharing the scene with a Homo erectus.
Homo erectus (a primitive human) & Gigantopithecus, a 3 metre tall, 500kg giant ape.
Here are two watercolour paintings I made.
First, we have an ancient, but also largest of the great apes called Gigantopithecus taking a Homo Erectus under his wing.
Second, we have an Egyptian Sphinx fending off a Griffin near Giza.

Gigantopithecus was a real extinct genus of ape that existed from perhaps nine million years to as recently as one hundred thousand years ago. Up to 3 meters tall, it existed in the same time frame and geographical location as several hominin species.
For #FossilFriday, with a certain big ape back in cinemas this weekend, it has to be (necessarily speculative) #paleoart of Gigantopithecus.
