Tonight - like characters from an Expressionist sci-fi movie or a Ray Harryhausen stop-frame flick we have Andrew Mockett's colourful c.1992 interpretations of bad guys Morgoth and Gothmog. Yes, the former may be a little Martian but, hey, that balrog is just so cool :)

I always preferred this illustration of Gothmog by John Howe. He looks so mysterious and threatening. The movie guy is just an ugly bastard.
Though I never read the books, and from what I heard his race is a subject of discourse.
