#OTD in 1824 geologist Charles Lyell wrote to Gideon Mantell about his recent visit to #MaryAnning in #LymeRegis where he saw 'the discovery of a superb skeleton of Ichthyosaurus by Miss Anning. It was perfect, save the tail which a cart-wheel had passed over. It was 2 feet long'

Whenever Mattel makes an aquatic reptile everyone gets excited, and for good reason! Still hoping we get an ichthyosaurus and an elasmosaurus. But a liopleurodon is a really welcomed addition. #JurassicWorld
#OTD in 1819 William Bullock began the 26-day auction of the entire contents of his London Museum, the Egyptian Hall on Piccadilly. Amongst the specimens to be sold was the #ichthyosaur skull found in 1811 by #MaryAnning’s brother Joseph. #FossilFriday

What is the correct name for the platypterygiine ichthyosaur "Ichthyosaurus" campylodon? It's not Pervushovisaurus campylodon like has been claimed in recent literature, but instead Myopterygius campylodon. Read about it in my new blog post.
@friel This is a phenomenon in its own right, as it evolved in swordfishes/sailfishes, leptonectid ichthyosaurs like Eurhinosaurus, Protosphyraena (left), and thalattosaurs like Xinpusaurus (right).
#OTD in 1830 #MaryAnning wrote to JS Miller, Curator of Bristol Institution @bristolmuseum offering him an ichthyosaur paddle for £1, and a fossil fish she had discovered in December 1829. She recognised that it was a new, undescribed fossil and sought a modern analogue: 1/4
