April 6, 1821, the description of the very first ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs by William Conybeare published. Both fossils were found by palaeontologist Mary Anning 🐉💦

Mary Anning

Anning’s discoveries were key pieces of evidence to support the theory of extinction. While the theory existed prior, Anning’s finds provided solid evidence for the “age of reptiles”. She discovered the ichthyosaurus, the plesiosaurus, a pterosaur & more.

Among my favourite animals are - the 'fish lizards' - and it's always a joy to look at their fossils (we have many of them in the UK). So I _loved_ compiling current thinking on them for my new book Ancient Sea Reptiles, out now from and

Paleo Fact!

Plesiosaurus (Almost Lizard) is a plesiosaurid from Early Jurassic England! Its name refers to how it more closely resembled modern reptiles than Ichthyosaurus, which was found in the same dig site a few years prior! It's most easily- (1/2)

March 9, 1847, Mary Anning dies aged just 47. Carpenter daughter, she founded a fossil business in Lyme Regis, Dorset, making important discoveries like complete skeletons of Ichthyosaurus, Plesiosaurus and the flying reptile Dimorphodon 🦴🔨

The main chapters cover ‘lesser known’ marine reptile groups, then the geologically longer-lived the diverse and often long-necked those phenomenal giant lizards the and, finally, the sea (images by Brian Choo)

Young ichthyosaurs are caught between a rock and a hard place - a pair of fishing basal tetanurans and a lurking Rhomaleosaurus. Not as happy with this one as I would like but I learnt lots about how to paint water and caustics!

Today is but unfortunately, I have yet to draw any whales, which is a damn shame. As compensation, here’s Ichthyosaurs instead.

On a Late Triassic afternoon, a large ichthyosaur lazily drifts into a shallower bay on its side to be pampered by local fish and early pterosaurs, who peck at dead skin, bits of food and ectoparasites.

Here’s the rest of Godzilla Monsters in SpongeBob redesigns. Rodan was interesting as I changed him into an Ichthyosaur, Mothra I based on Leo’s Aqua form and GMKs eyes, and Ghidorah I based on Moray Eel’s and his concept art from KOTM with added Bioluminescence

Did giant ichthyosaurs swim in pods, and migrate to give birth? Just like whales do today, but in the Triassic? We think so, at least based on a spectacular site in eastern Nevada called Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park... 1/

Got quite a few!! Here's a couple of them! Thylacine, Gorgonopsid, Aenocyon/ichthyosaur, and Kaprosuchus!

Like the band playing on the deck of the Titanic I will post Dinovembers on here as long as I can. Here we have Guizhouichthyosaurus from the Triassic, of which one individual died with the remains of a large thalattosaur in its stomach. It bit off more than it can chew...

Love how you have all the iconic British Jurassic reptiles like Plesiosaurus, Ichthyosaurus, Dimorphodon and Scelidosaurus and then there's just Stegosaurus wandering out of the sea like it just swam across the proto-atlantic
