Pastel Paleotober Day 24: Juramaia 🐁

Juramaia was a basal eutherian mammal from late Jurassic China and is the earliest known relative of all placental mammals. Its discovery showed that the lineages of placental mammals and marsupials had diverged before the Cretaceous.

It's Wild Koala Day! Today we're celebrating all things koala.

Koalas are marsupials and are more closely related to kangaroos than to bears - even though they're often called "koala bears".

I ❤️ marsupials, especially weird fossils, but I can't deny they aren't as diverse as placentals. Our new paper, out today & led by , uses jaw shape to show they also evolve more slowly, likely due to developmental constraints https://t.co/8GbDV2GarN

So, here's where the thylacine fits within all these bitey critters.
You can see that the shapeworld of anger-faced animals is basically divided into danger-cats 🐱 and snippy-snap-dogs 🐶. Including the marsupials!
Now then, is the thylacine convergent with anyone?

According to John Gould's Mammals of Australia (1863), early colonists primarily came to know feathertail gliders - the world's smallest gliding mammal - because they often crawled out of branches that were thrown on travellers' fires. https://t.co/Jlbfm4IvMh
