For this 2001 Melee promo poster, they did *not* use a render from Melee to represent Donkey Kong.
As you can see from the third image, DK's skin is much more yellow in Melee. They likely drew from some Donkey Kong 64 promo render.

There's not really a thematic throughline for the kind of character I like, it just depends on the game and the context around the character.
@JetgoshiEX Meowth from Pokemon. Apparently, there was a rumor back a long time ago that Meowth was supposed to be a fighter for Melee. But regardless if that's true or not I feel like he should've been a fighter a long time ago since he's just as popular as Jigglypuff if not more.
