Still thinkin’ bout that AV Club interview where & discuss the q***r subtext in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer... and now I’ve created this. 😆 Don’t be surprised if more art pops up in this Rankin-Bass style. 🦌💙

If you don't believe people when they tell you that the Rankin-Bass Hobbit was their introduction to horror, then somebody needs to head on down to Goblin town

I feel like my style is still evolving, but I was definitely inspired by anime & the Rankin-Bass animated films from the 80s (technically still anime, lol). But the body types of my characters are less stylized & more realistic, with the exception of my chibi art.

Finished animation cels from The Last Unicorn (1982), dir. Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass

As with many of their films, Rankin-Bass outsourced animation of The Last Unicorn to Topcraft, a Japanese studio behind projects like Maya the Bee and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Want to watch something different this Holiday season? Try “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus”, the forgotten Rankin-Bass Christmas movie!

Santa is raised by immortal fae folk, who recount the story of his life to decide whether or not he deserves the gift of immortality

Paul Coker Jr., who did the character designs for the 1969 Rankin-Bass “Frosty the Snowman”, is also a frequent contributor to MAD. His most famous feature is “Horrifying Cliches”, depicting overused phrases made literal through comically grotesque monsters.

Stumped on what to do with our holiday cards this year because I was so proud of last year’s Rankin-Bass theme

2019 vs 2010. Leave it to me to draw/redraw fanart from one of my favorite, more obscure cartoons in existence...Tigersharks, Rankin-Bass’ other cartoon that sits as the usually forgotten younger sibling to their previous Thundercats and Silverhawks. Always loved Mako.

I'm pretty sure Thundercats looked fantastic throughout. It was a Rankin-Bass series, they're rarely off their game. Look at these stellar Mumm-Ras.

I don't know where the "Thundercats was always bad" rhetoric materialized from. It was corny sure, but it was top notch corn.
