one of the greatest animated specials of all time idc
Yas went off of the parameters of making Akira athletic, though he was changed to being younger, Japanese, and a soccer player. This was done for lots of reasons, but Yas' studying of Americana characteristics goes back to his work w/ Mushi Pro & Rankin-Bass.
Members of The Usual Gang of Idiots are reporting the passing of Paul Coker Jr. at age 93. Besides being a prolific MAD Magazine illustrator known for his “Horrifying Cliches” series he also did the character designs for all of the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials from 1969 onward.

another missed opportunity is that i wasn't able to make the rankin-bass one out of clay like i intended. i tried, but the r-b models were made out of wood i believe which is a very particular look. i ended up sort of fusing that modeled look with the style of these r-b dev arts!

I'm here to smoke Old Toby and Stan the 1977 Rankin-Bass Hobbit movie.
... and I'm all out of Old Toby.
I took hard inspiration for this design from the classic Rankin-Bass Gollum and Dark Crystal Mystics. An odd combo, but it works!

The earliest I can remember drawn hands being fascinating to look at was growing up watching Topcraft's HOBBIT cartoon for Rankin-Bass. It was influential for me in a big way overall, but the hands are always what come to mind first when I think about it
This reminds me, around Christmas, I gotta check out the Rankin-Bass special that Walter Matthau voiced Scrooge in. His only VO role.
anyway this film is beautiful and WEIRD and i love rankin-bass so MUCH
Pink Pooka bit inspired by Rankin-Bass movies which I have been binging.
Just when you thought the latter day Rankin-Bass Christmas specials couldn’t get more obscure (let alone *niche*)...
(Collab with @Bman44A featuring Jilly & Wren! They did the sketch, I did the Lines/Color/BG/VHS Effects!)
I co-ran a little Rankin-Bass holiday Sona event with my pal @lunchmonger and like any sensible fella, I've become Krampus
Still thinkin’ bout that AV Club interview where @bendelacreme & @thejinkx discuss the q***r subtext in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer... and now I’ve created this. 😆 Don’t be surprised if more art pops up in this Rankin-Bass style. 🦌💙 #CourtToons #JinkxMonsoon #BenDeLaCreme
If you don't believe people when they tell you that the Rankin-Bass Hobbit was their introduction to horror, then somebody needs to head on down to Goblin town
