I've been studying a new art style recently and brushed up on lighting techniques (ie ambient occlusion/shadows)

I also found new brushes and I like the texture !

@ponkosei Lighting in cell shading is simplified, no smooth gradients, shadows are mostly just hard edged areas on an object.

Full rendering is moreso where it actually tries to emulate more realistic lighting.

okay i think the color palette was definitely a big factor ! here’s one side with aikatsu colors and one with mermaid melody colors (i color picked from parts that i thought might translate to merm’s color theme from the refs)

shadows are also a bit bigger in the hair

creating asymmetries in those points the human eye picks up quickly like the eyes, cheekbones, chin, etc seems important for effective camo
a mix of both pulling shadows down and inverting them seems to obscure the human face well

· value creates very strong shapes (oval head)
