@hertskingfisher The shot on the left is just astonishing. And in its spareness, with just the kingfisher and branch, it also reminds me of Ruskin's lovely sketch in the Ashmolean.
Elephants fighting signed Khurshid Banu, 1600. Women miniature artists are poorly documented, but they do exist, even within the Mughal royal family, as attested by this fine image now at the Ashmolean
2/2 The Arundel Marbles, now at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. He would have approved!

Love the Ashmolean #MuseumsUnlocked I worked next door at the Institute for a decade and went as often as poss. I think this shield is one of their most significant items. It’s a Nipperwiese class Late Bronze Age object from Long Wittenham (Oxon) 1/2
For this week's Dantean-themed #GabrielGiovedi:
'Beatrice meeting Dante at a marriage feast, denies him her salutation' (watercolour 1855, Ashmolean)
An award-winning feat of chilly rebuffery!

Raphael’s drawings and sketches are in many ways more expressive than his finished, perfected paintings ~ Heads of Two Apostles 1520 (detail, Ashmolean) ■ Self-portrait as Young Man 1499 (Ashmolean) ■ Man Carrying Old Man on Back 1514 (Albertina, Vienna)
Seeing my illustrations of speakers at the #isletsinox2019 conference displayed around the brilliant Ashmolean museum was a special moment #sciart #scicomm
The elephant Ganesh Gaj and rider north India, 1660 - 1670 from The Collection of Howard Hodgkin at The Ashmolean Museum.
Elephants were highly valued by the rulers of India, for their power in battle and their majestic dignity as ceremonial mounts.
