My take on the cover of AVENGERS no.53, June 1968 - after JOHN BUSCEMA & GEORGE TUSKA

The Avengers (Apr1970)
Arkon the Magnificent abducts the Scarlet Witch and seeks the destruction of Earth in “The Warlord and the Witch!” Writer Roy Thomas, Penciler John Buscema, Inker Tom Palmer: I’m excited by return of Pietro and Wanda, but the premise is ludicrous. 3/5

It's John Buscema's birthday. I got to work with JB at the very beginning of my career, when I (in a state equal parts excitement and terror) took over CONAN from the great Roy Thomas.

Let's say I still had lot to learn, but it was an honor working with one of my artist-heroes.

Sal Buscema art appreciation post - from The Incredible Hulk issue 272 written by Bill Mantlo. Those first three pages are better than most horror films. Also, I love any Wendigo appearance in Marvel comics.

5) Inspiration Cont'd

2. John Buscema, he is best known for his work with the Avengers, Silver Surfer, and Conan the Barbarian

3. Kim Jung Gi, he was known for his large form drawings, he even has Guinness world record for “the longest drawing by an individual”

Buscema did great stuff. I think Priest (then James Owsley) is my fave writer on this. Only <20 issues w/ Buscema, but he kept me reading it when Buscema left after ~160 issues. Tight, twisting plots, direct, credible dialog. He wrote memorable new characters & kept Conan sharp.

The Trial Of Peter Parker.

Whatever else you may say about this arc, it has a solid set of covers imo:

Web Of Spider-Man 126 - Romita Jr
Amazing Spider-Man 403 - Bagley
Spider-Man 60 - Lyle
Spectacular Spider-Man 226 - Buscema/Sienkiewcz

Final note: Spectacular Spider-Man 223 has a random assortment of pinups at the end of the issue, including these two by Sal Buscema that I quite like.

Leagues better than when Sienkiewcz is finishing (or rather butchering) his breakdowns.

Oh merde. I've just realised that after I finish the sword & sorcery issue of 'Stan & Jack' with Barry Windsor-Smith & Big John Buscema, and then do 'Giant-Size Stan-Thing' with Berni Wrightson, I THEN have to do a trippy as fuck, full colour Moebius & Druillet issue, don't I? 😱

There's Elric. Huge forerunner for dark fantasy, one of the Sword and Sorcery fathers along with Conan, also Black Moon Chronicles and Alabaster. Visually there's like Golden/Silver age masters like Hal Foster, Alfredo Alcala, Frazetta, Alex Nino and John Buscema too

I read and re-read these books back in the day, making Buscema my art god. And I wouldn't be where I am today if not for that.

I did an homage cover of Avengers after the very John Buscema. It's special for many reasons but also because I colored it myself. The original inks will be for sale on https://t.co/MNFgPFE1ht
