Spent a very enjoyable hour or two yesterday in the beautiful courtyard of St. James's Church, Piccadilly,
at the unveiling of a new gravestone for the great #JamesGillray, grandfather of political cartooning. His profession is sadly struggling, but not dead yet!
Here is a still from McCay's Lusitania and the famous enlistment poster of the drowned woman and her child. Pretty moving stuff. This is different from political cartooning. There is a realism here, animated or not. Surely this helped films become 'serious'.
Today offers another exceptional Usagi Yojimbo, but two panels in particular stood out as all-time great bits of cartooning. The expression on this apathetic “Tofu Man” & Usagi observing the town from the rooftop. Just masterful. #NCBD

Finally got a chance to sit down with @juni_ba’s DJELIYA, which is a delight of a book. It’s a propulsive, heady, immensely charming little meditation on how we engage with our pasts and how we use them to shape our futures, with a really strong voice and outstanding cartooning.

Kubert was born in Poland in '46, but emigrated to the US when he was 2 mo old. As a youth, he used to visit the studios where Archie comics were drawn & the guys there would give him tips about figure drawings and cartooning.
