Day 8 of #doctoberstone: photograph!
This one is based off the Cottingley fairy hoax, where two girls took pictures with various 'fairies' in 1917. They proceeded to unintentionally trick a bunch of adults who ended up arguing for the next decade over the truth of the images.
@OGOMProject My own take on Charn from Narnia, The Cottingley Fairies and Pandora's Box.
#QuarantineHerbarium inspiration - Harriet Wickham (1766-1847) was an amateur botanist who enjoyed botanising from her garden at Cottingley, & from walks in the local area. Here, she documents finding Bog Pimpernel & the carnivorous common sundew on the marshy moorlands in 1799.
The Cottingley #Fairies appear in a series of five photographs taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths in 1917. In the early 1980s, Elsie and Frances admitted that the photographs were faked, using cardboard cutouts of fairies copied from a popular children's book of the time

The Cottingley fairy photos from 1917 have always fascinated me, so I decided to draw the first and original photo. It's amazing how these kids managed to fool so many people with paper cutouts.

In 1823 the #Cottingley Toll Bar was moved from the bridge to the #Keighley & #Bradford Turnpike at Cottingley Bar, where it was attacked by a mob angry about the charges. Tolls ended in 1858 & the Bar House was demolished in 1913. What a #Shame
The Cottingley Fairies were an early photographic hoax conducted by two young girls, Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, who were 16 and 9. They used paper cutouts from a picture book and succeeded in fooling many people. #FolkloreThursday
COTTINGLEY FAIRIES 4. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was undeterred in his belief in the Cottingley #Fairies and even interpreted the point of a pin on the gnome's midriff in the photo of Frances as the creature's 'umbilicus', proving that fairies may be born
