Two Erics, two views of Cuckmere Haven. Left, 'The Coastguard Station' by Eric Slater, c. 1930s. Right, 'Cuckmere Haven' by Eric Ravilious, 1939. The Ravilious view is more or less from outside the cottages, looking landward.

What a lovely thread.
Whenever I hear Cuckmere River I think of Cuckmere Haven, which is where I first encountered the Cuckmere, many years ago. And Ravilious' painting gets me every time I see it

I’m so looking forward to meeting up with a few of my fellow CVP buddies this coming week down at the beautiful Cuckmere Haven on the Sussex coast. This will be a revisit for me and I can’t believe that 5 years have passed since my last Summer School wit… https://t.co/xMPd31xQGT

Eric Ravilious 'Cuckmere Haven' 1939 tracing the sinuous curves of the Cuckmere river meandering through the chalk downlands of East Sussex. Interesting the river does service as one of his white chalk roads, so frequently seen in his paintings. Landscape reduced to essentials.
