#OnThisDay 1645: Parliamentarians formed the New Model Army to fight the Royalists in the English Civil War. Its soldiers, many of whom held radical and dissenting views, became full-time professionals rather than part-time militia.
On this day in 1643, parliamentarians commanded by Sir John Meldrum capture Gainsborough - the 3rd time it had changed hands that year.
A small fleet from Hull had supported Meldrum's attack upon a royalist fort at Barton on Strather by bombarding it.
