Maurice Sendak, no stranger to criticism for presenting "inappropriate" content, had a response for his detractors: “The adults who are troubled by the scariness of [Max’s] fantasy forget that my hero is having the time of his life.”

For those who don't know, this is an illustration from a children's book version of Swan Lake. The illustrator was the late Trina Schart Hyman, who, pretty much like Maurice Sendak, seemed to push the boundaries of what's deemed safe for kids and God bless her for it.

Even in this Sendak image, there is only the row of trees that the characters are interacting with. The soft blue creates great silhouettes. It would not have worked if there was an entire forest behind them.

'Look for the picture books of...Ardizzone, Burningham, Browne, Blake, Shirley Hughes, the Ahlbergs & Sendak. Read them with your most adult awareness of life & literature & text, & you will see that the invitations they offer to young readers are far from infantile.'

For those of you who are struggling with Father's Day, perhaps you don't have a good relationship with yours, then I'm here for you. If your dad rejected you, as a Papa myself, I just want to say I'm proud of you. Sending you lots of love.
