P1: I was thinking of interesting ways to draw a map of Central America when I chanced upon the opening scene of Dumbo (of all things). And no map is complete without an undulating sea serpent, this one based on an Aztec sculpture made out of mosaic pieces of turquois and shell.

The Greek "drakon" meant serpent, although it could still be a large, divine/quasi-divine creature like the python slain by Apollo. Many artists just turn the python into a dragon anyway, because after all why leave money (treasure?) on the table.
