Hatching is an avenue for shading with, but also great establishing texture. It’s also not exclusive to being used with ink or anything, you can use it with other media. Our eyes translate the lines into values. Cross hatching is the crossing of lines. Contour is curving lines

This goes from left to right. The far left piece lead me to the middle piece as well as the far right piece. I liked the vertical lines and the light and dark values.

Here's one of the final things I do on a large painting comm, I put it in B+W to check the values.

This helps me see if the characters are sufficiently in focus in terms of colour and lighting, as with a complex background you don't want the BG to end up as the main focus.
