I'll be honest whenever I pick out colors for shading I kinda just eyeball it and see what looks good.

if I'm trying to emulate a certain style of shading/lighting/whatever I tend to use the original image heavily for reference.

I think about this pic a lot. Not just because it's neat, but it was me wanting to change up my inking a bit, looking at an artist I really liked how they did their inking, and tried to emulate. Also it's neat.

didn't post this outside my Webzone but i drew a zun spoof Mimi! I won't lie it's insanely hard to emulate his art so I did give up and use Reimu's UFO sprite as a base for face and proportions. tfw when you're too good at art and can't capture Zun's SOUL in his drawings....
