William Hogarth - Satire des élections...
Been talking to a few pals about how our art seemed to know more about us than we consciously did. Hogarth started off as a story character my (now) spouse created when we were early teens, I realised I was projecting onto the design years later.
(art from 2016 onwards)
Eric Hobsbawm, Peter De Francia, c.1955
both members of the Geneva Club in the mid-1950s.This club was an opportunity for left-wing artists and intellectuals to meet. Those who attended their gatherings also included J.D. Bernal, John Berger, Paul Hogarth Derrick Greaves.
➡️Autoportrait au chien, 1745.
➡️Miss Mary Edwards (mécène et amie de William Hogarth), 1742.

Wonderful to see photos of a mackerel seller and muffin man - proud traditions! See Laroon's print from 1688 https://t.co/hcW3TGToSh Hogarth's from the 1740s https://t.co/KbiAV7kkzy. https://t.co/uhzIXFaL6O
[1 of 2 tweets] A Rake's Progress - 8 paintings by William Hogarth (GB, 1697–1764). First 4 pictures: (1) The Heir (2) The Levée (3) The Orgy (4) The Arrest. Tom Rakewell, heir & spendthrift son. Note the Rose Tavern, a famous brothel in Covent Garden - and then arrest for debt.
More practice. Hogarth the Flayed. Red knight.
Just some sketches from Iron Giant Hogarth was probably one of the coolest kids to be on TV
Too gloomy, but #OTD 1837, #Dickens's beloved sister-in-law, Mary Hogarth, "that spirit which directs my life" (& inspired a number of his characters) died in his arms https://t.co/DRQZYSmUSi
Another unruly crowd, this time for Francis Goodchild's Lord Mayor's Procession. Hogarth's account of the parallel lives of the Industrious and Idle apprentices is on the surface a simple morality tale - but his view seems a bit ambiguous. Satirists never tell a simple story.
Excitement over new @britishmuseum Collections On-Line made me forget to tweet the next instalment of Industry and Idleness. Tom is in court and guess who decides his fate - and who is there to watch the judgement. And see how Hogarth changes the composition in working drawings. https://t.co/TrX3dmxSVS
