Velázquez’s painting inspired the series of Screaming Popes by Francis Bacon. Bacon deconstructs the confidence & spirituality of man & the power of religion employing the portrait. To see just how powerful Velázquez’s image is, compare it to Raphael’s of a predecessor.

August 6, 1660: Diego Velázquez, Spanish Baroque artist and leading court painter of King Phillip IV, dies.

One of the most influential artists of the 17th century, Velázquez's "Coronation of the Virgin" (1644) is one of the most beautiful examples of his work. 🎨

Este autorretrato de Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench que podéis visitar en el , realizado en 1899, muestra una gran vida interior, con significativas referencias hacia la tradición pictórica de los maestros antiguos que tanto admiraba, en este caso Velázquez.

There is a small but extremely choice collection of Spanish works. El Greco (1577-9) An Allegory, Velázquez (1618) An Old Woman Cooking Eggs & Murillo’s Personification of Summer (1640). The Old Woman is one of Velázquez’s earliest works.

Study after Velázquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1953), Two Figures (1953), Figure with Meat (1954) & Study of a Figure (1954). Bacon presented humanity as decaying meat - a truly nihilistic perception of life.

Arguably, one of Diego Velázquez's most recognizable works is "Las Meninas" (1656).

But I much prefer his richly coloured and meticulously rendered religious works, like "Coronation of the Virgin" (1644). 🎨

June 6, 1599: Spanish painter Diego Velázquez is baptized.

Diego became the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. Sadly, the painter rarely signed or dated his works, meaning they are often identified by style.
